Truepoint Talks: The Presidential Election, Markets and Your Financial Plan

With Election Day in less than two months, our Truepoint Talks webinar on September 23 took a look at the impacts of the upcoming presidential election on the markets and financial planning opportunities.

Lauren Niestradt kicked off the conversation, providing some historical context on how financial markets react to political events and reiterating the importance of taking the long view when it comes to investing. It’s time in the markets that matters, not timing the markets. The conversation continued with a comparison (click here to download slides) of both candidates’ tax plans, led by John Evans, which also included some case studies to see how these plans may actually play out.

Knowing that it is impossible to predict the outcome of the election, there are some things to do (and avoid) in the months ahead, as mentioned in the webinar. The most important takeaway is to avoid the temptation to implement any financial transaction based on your prediction of future income tax or estate tax law. But what you can do is ensure full clarity into your financial and estate goals and identify the actions that preserve your ability to achieve your goals under different outcomes.
