Should You File Your Taxes With Online Software or Hire an Accountant?

What are a few items people tend to miss when they do their taxes, whether filling out their tax form themselves or using tax software?

The biggest misses I tend to see are related to missed deductions (i.e., mortgage interest, real estate taxes, charitable contributions), improper treatment of distributions from tax-advantaged accounts (i.e., health savings accounts and 529 education accounts) and unclaimed credits (home energy, education, etc.). In addition, state and local returns tend to be given less attention when self-prepared. State-specific deductions and credits are often missed as a result.”
